Calculating Your Keyword Density

As you know, there are many factors used by Google and other major search engines when calculating your search engine ranking for a particular keyword. Your link popularity is important, your title and meta tags are important, having unique content is important, and one other thing that is important is your keyword density.

Your keyword density is a percentage which is calculated by dividing the times your key word is on your website over how many words are on your website. So, lets say you have a website about fishing. On your home page, you have 200 words, and the word fishing is displayed 12 times, your keyword density for fishing would then be 6%.

If there are keywords you are trying to get ranked for, you need to be aware of your keyword density. As for what percentage you should shoot for, many people have a different opinion of that. We'd say that anywhere between 4% - 8% should be a solid keyword density. You don't want to have a 50% keyword density because this is not a good user experience and search engines could think you are spamming them. So, make sure you use your judgment and think about the user as you become aware of your keyword density.

There is a great website that can easily allow you to calculate your keyword density. The website is keyworddensity.com. Simply enter your website URL, and then enter the keyword you want to get data on, and click on calculate keyword density.

At the bottom, you will see your total keyword density for that web page and respective keyword. You can then make edits in an effort to increase or decrease your keyword density for that particular keyword.
