This post is to address a few things about domains. First of all I want to talk about my previous post where I asked a question about the ranking of a website with a preowned domain. The factors which will help a site to rank with a preowned domain that may not have any or few inlinks was answered correctly by some of you. The age of the domain is an important factor, but whats age if you have no content on a domain? Thats why when you find an expiring domain that has content on it, and you find that this content has been on it for years, if it is a niche that you can work then buy it.
Let me give you an example. This past week I bought a domain name of a person. That person had a website on this domain about a specific thing related to health. What I did then was search the title to see if that site still ranked for that term, and what do you know, it ranked for 2 good terms on the first page of Google out of almost 6 million results.
Now the funniest thing is as far as I can see, there are no inlinks to this site, but its been up for about 6 years, so obviously the content on the pages of this site are aged. What this tells me is that I shouldn’t have any problem using the cached content and using this domain to put adsense on it and make some money. So once again, a domain That is 5 or 6 years old with none to few inlinks can outrank a newer site with thousands of inlinks because of the age of the domain and the age of the relevant content on the pages of that website.
Now I am not saying that the other site with thousands of links cannot outrank the aged site. If it continues to build anchor links for the specific keywords that both are trying to rank for it will eventually take over that top spot, but all I am merely saying is that a site with no inlinks can outrank another site on the same subject that has thousands of inlinks.
What type of Domain to Buy? This brings me to a second thing. What about new domains and expiring domains? Should I get a .com or a cheaper .info and why?
This has been discussed sporadically already, but lets talk about the different advantages. First of all with new domains. We all know after I made a previous post about the way Google looks at .info domains that some changes with Google regarding .info domains were made. Now I am not going to tell you to not buy .info domains, because Google is unpredictable and we really don’t know what changes could happen yet again. But regardless, it all comes down to your individual circumstances.
If everyone had a several hundred dollars to invest in domains then I would say preowned domains is the way to go. I like preowned and spend more time browsing through soon to expire domains rather than looking for new ones to buy. On the other hand, if you do not have as much money, but still a reasonable amount to buy new .com domains then by all means get them especially for adsense niches.
Now if you do not have as much and you are on a shoestring budget, then you really do not have much of a choice other than to buy .info domains at the 99 cents that they have on special at Godaddy sometimes. But the issue now is that it may take longer for you to get them indexed because Google has changed their stance to become more strict on .info domains because of spammers out there.
Getting Results You can see fast results with a preowned .com or a new .com many times, but not every case. With the new .com you will get a good burst of traffic of you get the site all indexed quickly, however it may level off and drop you way down in Google search results because it is new if you get too much traffic and too many inlinks. This would in effect be getting sandboxed.
On the other hand you have the preowned domain which has already withstood the test of time and is ready to rock and roll. What this means is you can not only get results right away but can continue to see results for weeks and months.
Not every case is just so, but with the domains that I have bought this is my experience with them and I would not be saying this if it was not the case with multiple domains I have bought new and used, so I hope this helps you to see where you can prioritize when it comes to buying domains so that you can get what you can afford. There is a whole lot more detail i could elaborate more on but what I have covered is sufficient enough.
