I originally planned to go into more detail about about niche blogging, but in the traditional sense I am not. Let me explain.
As a new person blogging, you do not have all the tools you probably need, and you may not have the resources to get the links you need right away. With that in mind lets play it safe and go for a larger niche when we build our site.
From what I have seen with Google in the last few months, I am going to tell you it is safer to play the larger niche rather than the small one in some cases. And for a new person, the larger route is the way to go.
Let me explain what I mean. Lets say you wanted to make a niche blog about Tampa Lasik eye surgery. So you would be going for the term “Tampa Lasik” of course. Now looking at the Google keyword tool, I notice that there are approximately 2400 searches for that term the previous month. Now here is what we need to consider:
Is it worth it to work for position one for less than 100 searches per day for this term?
I’m gonna have to say no go on this one. I am just not too thrilled. If it was 6000 or 7000 then sure, but not for this. Whats the next option then? The next and best option would be to make a general blog about lasik eye surgery. Now I want to point something out, and its a statement that I back 110%.
“I’ve posted nearly 400 times on this site, and less than 20 URLs on CourtneyTuttle.com are responsible for more than 90% of my current traffic.” - Taken from Content has never been King
I want you folks to think about this a bit. The 2 most powerful things are anchor text links, and keyword research. If you become pros at this part, then the manner you write is not so important. If you build more links than a professional on page SEO guy you will outrank him. Do not ever lose focus on the fact that links are the lifeblood of your success.
With that in mind here is what I want you to do. Find a general topic that is broad but not too broad. As you have seen Lasik surgery was one example. Think of all the other things out there that you could write about. Here is a little help for those of you who are slow at coming up with something or just having a brain fart. ( Dentistry, sports cars, makeup, health insurance, aerobics, soccer, computer repair, hunting and fishing and the list could go on.)
Do you see how these are very broad, but they are a niche nonetheless. The next step is to do some keyword research. So go to the Google keyword tool, and type your main keywords in. Now start picking them apart and drilling down as I showed you before. Make a list of at least 100 keywords that people search for related to your main keywords. So lets say you are going to have a blog about fishing, then get keywords on types of lures, rods and reels, and even locations for fishing vacations.
The next step will be to start writing. Make the focus of each post related to one or 2 keyword phrases that you wrote down. Don’t spend an overly large amount of time researching the content, but still make the post keyword rich, however… Make sure your main focus is on the keywords you have written down. After each post get just a handful (3-4) of links to that post with the anchor text of the keyword term for that post. Either by commenting on blogs, or making a squidoo, or wordpress.com blog related to the subject that you can link from. If you are not familiar with link building, then read on to my next post and I will explain in detail, ways to help build links to your blog properly.
Just remember that the deeper you drill, the longertail keyword combinations you will come up with for a post, and it really won’t matter that your keywords for that particular post may only reflect 200 or even 300 searches per month, because it will add to your overall traffic. Some keywords you will nail and rank first page or even first spot for, and others you may not, which may be because of tougher competition. But in reality this will not matter if you rank for 20 or 30 terms, because that alone combined will allow you to make a nice portion of daily adsense, as long as your focus is on the 2 main ingredients which are keywords, and links.
